Our country needs proper planning and we in schools mainly teach facts to students, telling them who constructed Red Fort, who constructed Taj Mahal and which is called City Beautiful. The result is that we have got only Chandigarh in Punjab as well planned city and rest is mostly concrete jungle.

We do not teach students how Red Fort or Taj Mahal was planned, what is its area, how things are laid so meticulously without conjesting anything. Same goes for teaching the students about well planned Chandigarh (City Beautiful) so that they can learn to plan their cities, towns and villages.

You have to install tiles on a road, street, house or some other reactangular piece of area. Let us say that you have to purchase 4000 tiles.Write a computer program in any language which lists how 4000 tiles can be laid down.For example 400 rows of tiles can be laid down with 10 in each row, 200 rows of tiles can be laid down with 20 rows in each row etc. The number of tiles in a row should increase by 10 and if the answer is a fraction, then round it to nearest upper number. You can use (if - else) programming statement of that.

Visit your city and spot all the parks. Use you mathematical skills to estimate the area of each park. Make a list of parks and areas. Now write a program in any computer language to sort that list in decsending order of area.

RIGHT EDUCATION

The definition of education, that education is sitting in classes, reading books, watching smart class videos and occasionally having some games period and functions is not correct. It has played havoc with our country and most of our construction is concrete jungle with unclean cities and towns. If the education was correct then our students would not be running to foreign countries. The situation needs to be rectified.

All education should be done by doing the community work and learning necessary skills. Books and videos should be used only in the supportive role, not in the primary role, as we do now in schools. Students upto class 5 should be taught only by games and activities. Just teach Punjabi, Hindi and English with very few books. Simple maths and science skills should be taught. A teacher can brush the teeth of students so that the student gets the habit of doing that. Asking him by reading some cleanliness lines from book may not inculcate the habit of cleanliness. Students from class 5 to 12 should be taught everything by teachers working along-with the students to do the community work.

Eg-1:- Anything that can improve the quality of life of citizens of the area should be done as education.

Eg-2:- Students can help in hospitals and other government offices as government is short of people and it is not recruiting for vacant posts.

Eg-3:- Students and teachers should plant trees in streets, along the roads, parks and other suitable areas and Municipal Committees should provide the support.

Eg-4:- Take the students in city and villages of area to educate people about proper dumping of trash.

Eg-5:- Take tours to show rivers and other geographical locations of Punjab. Just by riverside teach them about river capacities like cubic feet, bridges, floods, droughts etc.

Eg-6:- Take tours to Chandigarh and teach them about town-planning.

Eg-5:- Teachers and students can construct trash pits. Municipal Committee should come forward to spot the sites for such pits.

Eg-6:- Students can check the electric connections of the area and provide computerized reports to Electricity Department for providing better electricity in the area. They can learn doing electric connections and make some electric appliances.

Maths and Science skills like measurement, trigonometry, electricity, magnetism and environment conservation can be taught along the way. A part of the fee collected by schools should be used to provide trash bins in area and providing refreshment to students and other part as salary of teachers and for school building where the daily work done is evaluated to see the progress of the area. The education officials should visit the area to see the transformation and help and work along-with the teachers where-ever the need be.

Remember:- If we keep on teaching students from books until degree level, then there is a huge gap between what they have learned and when the knowledge of books is applied and then when the student comes out as graduate or post-graduate the hands don’t have the skills to take pliers or spades. They can only sit in offices reading some rubbish management books wondering what to do and how to make people do.

You have been provided a list of all the streets by Municipal Committee that needs to be widened to 35 feet. Some streets from the list have already been widened but the Municipal Committee does not know that streets. You go around your city and make list of those streets. Now write a computer program in any programming language. The program takes these two list and then prints the list of streets where the widening work is still pending.

Amardeep and Mukesh are two room-mates. They jointly spend money on common things every month and at the end of the month, they tally the expenses to see if they have spent equal amounts. If there is a difference then the one who has spent less gives the appropriate amount to the other. Make two text files, one for Mukesh and the other for Amardeep. In each file keep on writing the expenses done by each with newline after each entry. Now write a computer program in any language of your choice to read each file and show the total expenses and the amount which each should have spent. Also show that if one has spent less amount then what amount he should be paying to the other so that each would share equal expenses.

Billing Account of a person is of 6 digits and an alphabet at end as check letter. You have been given a list of accounts. Write a computer program in any language to find out all the alphabets used as check letters. For example you have been given the list with following accounts

Draw a line 400px wide in Paintbrush on your computer. Now take a print out of this picture. Take a measuring scale and measure the length of line on paper in cm. Now divide 400 by this length. You will come to know the resolution of your printer. It means that if you want to print a line of 1 cm, then how many pixels line you should draw in Paintbrush.
